Why don't you take some time for a long cycling holiday and follow the river Weser from its source to its estuary where it flows into the North Sea. Enrich your journey by experiencing the Wadden Sea- an exciting contrast to the regions Weser Highland and Middle Weser you will have explored up until now. The harsh, damp sea air, the mud flats and the coastal cities Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven have their very own appeal. This cycling holiday is also well suited for inexperienced cyclists.

Day 1
Hann.Münden

Individual arrival in Hann. Münden

The starting point of your journey is already worth an extensive visit. Hann. Münden, where the rivers Werra and Fulda unite to form the Weser, enchants visitors with its framework buildings: Here you will find fine specimens of the Weser Renaissance. Embedded in historical fortifications, the old Werra Bridge, the tremendous Welfen Castle and the town hall await enthusiastic visitors. Booked rental bikes will be available at the hotel.

Day 2

Hann.Münden - Bad Karlshafen/Beverungen, approx. 45/55 km

Your first stage of the tour leads you through the Hessen Weserbergland region, past Reinhardshagen and the former Benedictine Monastery of Bursfelde in the Romanesque style. The pretty baroque town of Bad Karlshafen, where you will be spending the night, offers you the opportunity to visit the State approved saltwater thermal baths or the Huguenot museum. The small town of Beverungen attracts guests with its well preserved historical buildings and the remains of a castle from 1330.

Day 3

Bad Karlshafen/Beverungen - Holzminden/Bodenwerder, approx. 35-55 km

Today you will leave the foothills of the Solling behind you, before reaching the Fürstenberg castle, which is yet another great example of the Weser-Renaissance. It was first built around 1600 as a hunting castle and offers visitors an excellent view of the Weser Valley. Passing through the old Hanseatic town of Höxter with its numerous wooden-framed houses, you will reach Bodenwerder, the home of Münchhausen - with his birthplace and a commemoration room.

Day 4

Holzminden/Bodenwerder - Hamelin/Rinteln, approx. 55 km

Leaving the towns of Holzminden or Bodenwerder, which are well known for their perfumes and aromatic essences, you will follow the run of the river through romantic villages until you reach Hamelin. Pied Piper open-air performances and the Pied Piper’s house commemorate the origins of the world-famous fairytale. Images of the Pied Piper, who is rumoured to have appeared in 1284, can be found throughout the town.

Day 5

Hamelin/Rinteln - Minden, approx. 40/70 km

Leaving Hamelin you will cycle towards the well known spa-town of Bad Oeynhausen with extensive spas and the Aqua Magica, a very special landscaped garden, before crossing over the Weser and through the Wiehengebirge mountains and cycling onto the Northern German lowlands. The next town you will come to is Minden, whose old town is worth a stroll around. Attractive buildings from various epochs form an interesting contrast to the lively happenings in the pedestrian zone of the town.

Day 6

Minden - Nienburg, approx. 65 km

The countryside becomes more gentle as you cycle onwards: broad, lush green meadows replace the wooded hills, only the wind turbines break the view of the distance. You now find yourself in the historically significant area of the Middle-Weser: small farmyard cafés invite you to stop and have a rest, fruit-fields offer you the chance to pick your own fresh fruit. Today’s destination is the medieval fortress town of Nienburg. Traces of its eventful history can be found throughout the town – follow the bear paws!

Day 7

Nienburg - Verden, approx. 60 km

The landscape and scenery of the Middle Weser is characterised by the flat Weser marshes, fields, woods and broad moors and bogs. In Verden you will be able to visit the cathedral and history museum. The town become famous as a horse and jockey town. Today, the town still has a very successful horse-breeding business and since 1949 has been the site of an internationally well-known horse auction. For those who are interested in horses, a trip to the Horse Museum is recommended.

Day 8
Bremen

Verden - Bremen, approx. 55 km

Today you will only cycle for a short while: the Hanseatic city of Bremen is waiting to be explored. Like almost no other German city, Bremen combines urban flair with friendliness, historical ambience with modernity and cultural variety with typical Hanseatic atmosphere. You definitely shouldn’t miss a visit to the “Schnoor”, the oldest quarter in Bremen.

Day 9
Universum in Bremen

Bremen - Elsfleth, approx. 40 km

After a visit of the Bremen Town Musicians and the Statue of Bremen you continue cycling through Germany´s smallest state in direction of the North Sea. If you keep cycling along the Weser you cross Blumenthal, which has a unique natural landscape. Arriving in Elsfleth, you have reached one of the oldest towns along the lower Weser. And you can let your evening come to a relaxing close in the historical town centre.

Day 10
Bremerhaven

Elsfleth - Bremerhaven, approx. 55 km

Your last stage leads you through the Wurster countryside, the gateway to the national park "Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer". After arriving in the seaside town of Cuxhaven, we recommend a walk along by the sea where you can admire the harbour bulwark "Alte Liebe" and the famous lighthouse "Dicke Berta". You can also take a walk through the mudflats, a coach journey to the island of Neuwerk or a visit to one of the numerous museums.

Day 11
Mudflat near Cuxhaven

Bremerhaven - Cuxhaven, approx. 55 km

This stretch of the journey takes you through the Wurster region, the gateway  to the Wadden Sea National Park of Lower Saxony. Enjoy the view over the sea and the Wadden Sea and enjoy the fresh air of the North Sea. On arriving in the coastal city Cuxhaven it is best to take a stroll alongside the sea, where you can admire the port bulwark “Alte Liebe“ (old love) and the famous lighthouse “Dicke Berta” (fat Berta).

Cuxhaven Beach

After breakfast your cycle journey from the Weserstein to the Wadden Sea ends. Individual departure to Hann.Münden or home. If you wish we can extend your Weser Cycle Tour in Cuxhaven.
